Frank Kuotoh Ho (何國鐸) passed away at the age of 97 years at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas on December 24, 2024. He was born on July 1, 1927 in Shanghai, China - son of father Tung-Shih Ho and mother Hui-Zheng Chen. Frank Ho completed his first undergraduate degree in 1952 for agricultural engineering at Taiwan University and then taught civil engineering in 1958 at National Chen Kung University. He then immigrated to the United States to establish his masters degrees at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1961 and University of California Berkeley in 1963. He would later move to Chicago, Illinois to begin his engineering career and start a family. He spent the majority of his career in Houston, Texas where he was a key civil engineer for multiple projects working at Brown & Root Inc, Halliburton, and Stone & Webster. His last project was building the subway system in Taipei, Taiwan. In his retirement years, Frank contributed technical papers to NASA on the studies of the gravitational forces between the Earth and its moon. Frank spent a great deal of time giving back to the Chinese-American community in Houston and dedicated his time towards the Taiwan University alumni as well as several engineering forums sponsored by Chinese-Americans in Houston. Playing table tennis at the Chinese Cultural Center of Houston was his favorite past time. Frank will always be remembered for his warm cheerful smiles and and joyful singing.
Emily Chih-Lan Hsu Ho (許芝蘭) passed away at the age of 83 years in Houston, Texas on May 29, 2025. She was born November 19, 1941 in Guandong, China - daughter of father Jen-Lin Hsu and mother Sun-Yee Lee. Emily completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Law from National Taiwan University in July 1965. With her sights on being an American, Emily applied for her student visa and corresponded with Frank Kuotoh Ho (何國鐸.) In 1967, they married and a started their nuclear family. Emily completed a Master of Science Degree in Accounting with Honors at Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois in 1972. Emily and Frank moved to Houston, Texas where she was a corporate accountant in the oil and gas industry alst while raising her children. Emily was involved in several activities that served as a critical foundation for first generation Chinese Americans and their families in Houston. She always remained active across the National Taiwan University Alumni Association, Chinese Cultural Center of Houston, Taipei Municipal Zhongshan Girls High School Alumni, and Yuanji Dance Association. For over 30 years she was a pianist and choir member of the Chinese American Musician’s Association of Houston. As a civically engaged retiree, Emily devoted most of her working hours as a sister of the Tzu Chi Buddhist Association; she truly believed in their purpose. Emily will always be remembered for her enduring strength and compassion towards others.
Frank and Emily are survived by their two loving children Wesley and Alice. They are also survived by their grandchildren Peter and Alex Marino.
Memorial Service for Frank Kuotoh Ho and Emily Chih-Lan Ho will be held on July 5th, 2025 - 2-3pm CT at the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation located at 6200 Corporate Dr, Houston, TX 77036.
